Perhaps not a hummer? This guy really intimidated the humming birds, they were very happy when he flew off.

<![CDATA[fishing report]]>Tue, 19 Apr 2011 09:54:27 -0800http://bigbluffranch.com/2/post/2011/04/fishing-report.htmlBob and the gang fished the lake this weekend. the weather was more on the cloudy and cool side of spring conditions, but they did get some pretty good fishing in. It was great to see them again.
 • wooly buggers and purple plastic worms (on fly rods of course) worked well.
 • the fish were hanging fairly deep off points, the best tactic was to get close to shore and cast out and let it sink to depth.
 • catfish were hanging at the headwaters where the creek comes in
 • sunnies were suckers for small sinking yellow flies with a trailing minnow.

<![CDATA[Sheep will peacefully graze...the lawn]]>Tue, 12 Apr 2011 09:09:11 -0800http://bigbluffranch.com/2/post/2011/04/post-title-click-and-type-to-edit1.htmlPicture
Well, it is spring...and the lawn grows...and you bring in the sheep to graze it down!!
Big Bluff Ranch started with Vicky's parents in 1960 (see the "about us" tab), but my family, the Dawleys, has long felt a connection to the ranch too. My mom, Mary Dawley, made the stained glass window of the ranch logo for us in the early 1990's. It is very special to look out the window at this beautiful ranch, and know how much it means to us all.

<![CDATA[The eagles are nesting !]]>Fri, 08 Apr 2011 11:55:53 -0800http://bigbluffranch.com/2/post/2011/04/the-eagles-are-nesting.htmlPicture
This is pretty cool! If you look in the top middle of the picture, you see a pile of sticks up on a pine tree. If you are in the right spot at the right time (which I wasn't when I had the camera) you see a Bald Eagle's head...giving you the eagle eye. I would guess this nest is 1-3 years old. We feel rather silly not to have noticed it before this...but we are supposed to be looking at grass and livestock!!! We have had bald eagles visit the ranch off and on for 10-15 years, but this nest really makes it official. Those of you who have visited the lake will remember the ridge to the east (you know where the sun comes up in the morning?) of the cabana, well, if you look carefully at the skyline in the middle of the picture, that is K-1, the southernmost peak of that ridge. Only, this photo is shot about 1/2 mile due south of K-1...not clear? Well, come up and see for yourself!

Here is a detail shot of the nest, Now to get some photos of the birds.

<![CDATA[First of the Year !]]>Wed, 30 Mar 2011 13:58:27 -0800http://bigbluffranch.com/2/post/2011/03/first-of-the-year.htmlPicture
Our first fisherman of the 2011 arrived today. Jeff has been coming to fish with us since the early 1990's, he knows he has found a good "spot". Here is a photo of him docking our new fishing boat, complete with seats with BACKS !!! You can see the water is a little murky from the big rain we had a week ago, but it clears up pretty quickly. I will report more when I debrief Jeff on Friday.

<![CDATA[Check out our new fancy-dancy site]]>Tue, 22 Feb 2011 10:27:16 -0800http://bigbluffranch.com/2/post/2011/02/check-out-our-new-fancy-dancy-site.htmlWe have a standing joke around here that Margo is "still graduating from college" because on our old site, she still was. In other words, our old site hasn't been update in quite a few years.

As we move into 2011, we wanted to update our site with both content and functionality. The new content is everywhere, just click around to learn all about us and what is new. The new functionality can be found in the "book a visit" and "events" tab. Both of these tabs are super cool ways for you to visit the ranch.

Our book a visit page allows you to book a night or week up at the lake. While you are up there, feel free to fish or vegetate or some combination of both.

Our events page lists all of the shindigs we're hosting this year. We are planning to have a "open ranch" weekend over Easter, a range walk in June, and a harvest fest in Oct. Feel to register for any one of these events.

Thanks for checking out our site and we hope to see you soon on the ranch
